About the instructor: Dominique Payette – LL.B., J.D., LL.M | Technology & Privacy Lawyer with industry experience in Responsible AI, and collaborator of Fin-ML.

For 8 years, Dominique has researched and advised different entities on the responsible and ethical deployment of A.I. and other finance technologies. She is a published author, active researcher, and public speaker on the topics of A.I. fairness, transparency, and accountability. She also participates in industry-wide publications, round tables with regulators, and does pro bono legal work with start-ups and graduate students on Responsible AI.

As AI becomes an integral part of the financial industry, students and professionals alike should have a basic level of understanding of the underlying governance applicable to their work, including legal and ethical questions. The current strong industry desire to deploy generative AI has made this all the more important. Without possessing in-depth knowledge, one should have an overall understanding of the relevant legal and ethical components underlying AI-driven solutions. This workshop encourages awareness of these components by presenting a high leveled but comprehensive picture of legal and ethical accountability framework for AI in the financial industry.

The goal of this 2-hour interactive workshop “Legal and ethical accountability for A.I. in finance” is to help develop that basic understanding to enable students and professionals to navigate these omnipresent questions in a professional setting. AI technology, including generative AI, underpinning any given technology-based financial service should by no means be perceived as being legally independent from its enabling persons or organizations. In fact, Responsible AI should rather be called Responsible AI developers and deployers, as it is the organizations that bear accountability for harmful behaviour caused by AI. In other words, legal liability and ethical duties apply to financial services however technology-based they are. With generative AI, these questions have become more challenging to answer and solution, which will also be discussed in the workshop.
