1st Scientific Communication Workshop
Wednesday 26 January 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
FreeFor Fin-ML Students: 2 UNITS – PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Communicating our research beyond the echo chambers of experts from our own field is crucial. Improving your science communication skills will also lead you to develop many other skills which could be highly valuable. Luckily for you, there are multitudes of science communication and outreach opportunities you could access as a graduate student.
During this workshop, we will cover the basics of science communication techniques, and explore venues to practice your science communication skills, such as various outlets and organizations, to see what could be a good fit for you. You will also have the chance to experiment with science communication based on your own research.
The old mantra of “Publish or Perish” is obsolete. We have entered the “Visible or Vanish” area and you don’t want to be left behind.
About the instructor: Alexandra Gellé – Science communicator and Knowledge Broker at Nergica. Alexandra’s curiosity and passion for science know no bounds. With a long-standing interest in the way that sciences are communicated and shared with the public, she has directed and founded a number of organizations that endeavour to bridge the gap between the scientific community and society. In parallel with her Ph.D. in green chemistry and nanosciences, Alexandra has worked as a science communicator. She has for example written several popular articles for Science Network, The Conversation Canada, La Conversation Canada and Science Borealis. Alexandra has also facilitated chemistry awareness workshops for children, as well as science communication training workshops for university students. After graduating, she became a full-time science communicator as she joined Nergica’s team as a knowledge broker. Alexandra now helps promote renewable energy and the research undergoing at Nergica’s research center.
